Hey Codpopper, a really nice mellow tune you have there and amazing stuff with those tuning pegs. That's a very bell-like tone you are getting. What sort of effects were you using if you don't mind me asking?

My take on acoustic fingerstyle DADGAD - improv/unstructured.

Thanks for the comment!

To answer your questions.. The De-Tuning stuff just comes from ear.
I used to sit for hours and just play harmonics and try getting back into pitch as fast as I could.
Good hearing lets you do it alot faster I think.

Think of it as when you tune your guitar (standard tuning) and tuning with harmonics.
I assume either you tune that way or have seen someone do it.
You are basically doing the same thing.. I just usually tune a whole note down or up when I do.
It's hard with regular tuners, nearly 180 degrees on the tuner.

My tone comes from a few things..

First, I had problems with the pickup that came in my Ibanez EP9 Euphoria so I had I replaced it with the lastest Fishman "Matrix Natural" pickup. The EP9 has the "Aura Imaging System" built into the electronics. It has presets built in to completely change the sound of the guitar (5 different ones I believe). The Aura also has a built-in slider to mix how much of the sound you want to be from "Aura Imaging" and the actual natural pickup sound. I leave it on a preset that has a very tingy sound to it, lots of treble and echo and set the slider in the middle. This gives me a very echoey sound with decent bass and tingy highs. I'm not great at explaining these things I'm sorry.

Second, I use a POD X3 Live.. It has some pretty good presets for fingerpicking. The setting I used on "Mr. Legg" was "Piezo Fingerpick" because it has a smooth tone with delay.

Last, I have no fingernails! LOL
It's all hard funky fingertips... I can't stand having long fingernails. I lose alot of playing ability because of this so I have to just impovise and change things up. Thats one reason why all my songs are so mellow. It's not poppy per say.

Like I said I am not good at explaining alot about the way I play, I don't know alot of the technical jargon. I just piddle around.

Hope this gives you an idea of whats going on with my weird sound.

Take care brother!!
