Trouble with barre chords

I am on the barre chord lesson almost done with the beginner lessons, and im not sure how to put my first finger on what fret on my guitar. if anyone can tell me where to put my first finger on the guitar that would really help Thanks.

Hi.. I've taken some pictures of how I hold barre chords on the guitar.

Here's the E-shape barre chord where you fret all 6 strings with your first finger. The first picture is just the position of the first finger with no chord fretted; the second picture has me fretting a standard E-shape chord; and the third is of where my thumb is (It may not be the proper thumb placing but that's where I put it):

Here is the same as above except in the A-shape barre position. The main difference here is that the first finger is slightly lower and not fretting the bass E string, it is actually slightly resting on it to mute the string. Unless the music wants you to play that bass note, you will always mute it and also this position actually makes it easier to barre these chords because you are not having to barre all 6 strings, only 5 (I'm actually fretting a minor chord shape in this picture):
