Techniques – Sweep Picking Part II - August '08

Last month I introduced sweep picking, talking through how to execute the technique and giving some exercises you might try to start adding sweeps into your repertoire. If you missed Part I, you'll find it here:

http://www.guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26059

In Part II, we'll be building on last month's introduction by looking at more complex patterns for sweeps as well as how different arpeggio shapes can be used to create more expressive musical ideas. We will also be adding notes with slides and taps to give you more musical options.

For reference, the 'Scale of the Month' articles that you may find useful as background to the exercises that follow are below:

Aeolian: http://www.guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24663
Major: http://www.guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24420
Diminished: http://www.guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25349

Here are some more ideas to experiment with. This month's examples should show you how minor manipulations in arpeggio shapes can add colour... once again, it's up to you whether you hammer and pull or pick all the notes on the same string. Try improvising with these and working them into your lead playing. Full Access subscribers can use the jam tracks to experiment in different styles and time signatures.

Next time, a nice little piece of flash using only sweeps to really hone those skills...
