Getting started

Been playing for about 4 years now, preominantly rythm. I know a lot of chords but none of the theory and I got kinda sick of always having to look up chord progressions.

Recently I picked "Marooned" by pink floyd to be my goal song. I know it's lofty for someone just getting into lead, but I really do want to get there. Can anyone recommend the instrcutior to go with to get down that path?

To learn lead you really need to learn to read Tablature (Tab ) - having chosen a Pink Floyd song the Music should be readily available in a music shop

I just learnt by trawling the web and searching out music theory sites mainly aimed at the piano because they ,re not using tabs.Obviously i can,t mention any site in particular for fear of advertising which is not allowed but i,m sure you,ll find the same sites i did and they all rated as to which are the best. Many music theory web sites are free and cover up to grade 5 music theory which will certainly see you all right on your scales and chords but to cut down a lot of study if you learn the circle of 5ths you,ll know the 1/4/5 chords of all the major and minor scales very quickly but that will mean you applying that knowledge to a knowledge scales so you can construct chords using only notes used in the relevent scale.

Hello Halex,

for theory you should look into Christopher Schlegel's lessons. Christopher has a lot of lessons discussing theory.

Then you could look at Doug Fearman's section. He mainly teaches blues but has some great tutorial for small lead parts. The important thing to work on when you start lead is dexterity and accuracy so even if it's not exactly the style you are looking for, Doug's tutorial on lead will help you in the long run.

its a realy usefull sight for lead techniques and modes and it has great gutar practice games on it, check it out! :D
