Hey everyone-

Lately I've been really trying to figure out some of the patterns and progressions that Trey from Phish uses and I'm having some difficulty. Maybe he doesn't use any real progressions, but I'm searching for some kind of pattern. I'm hoping someone can help me with that. Also, I was curious if anyone had some suggestions for a intermediate guitarist trying to learn to improv well. All replies appreciated.

There are many different techniques to use while learning how to improv. The biggest thing you want to do is learn you major/minor scales and know exactly what notes are in each. After this is accomplished or while you are learning try using only one string to make melodies on. This really helps to get you away from trying to use too many licks and helps you become more melodic.
Ain't nothin' but a Gear thang, baby!

if you really want to know what he uses go to http://www.phish.net/PhishFAQ/bguitar.html

THis will give you anything and everthing you want to know about him, his style, and his gear. Hope it helps

(p.s.- you really can't learn to make something up on the spot, but you can learn the scales necessary for the style that you are playing. The rest is really up to your imagination.
