GAS Alert! May '08 – Roland Cube Street

RRP $299 / £199

The latest addition to the Roland Cube family, the Cube Street is perhaps the most appealing yet... and certainly the most versatile. For guitarists on the move, its battery power option and low weight (just over 5kg) leave it with pretty much no competition. The two six-inch speakers offer impressive clarity, OK... so it's not going to sound like a Mesa/Boogie stack but for a small amp its performance exceeds its price tag.

Like the other models in the range, the Cube Street uses COSM technology to emulate many classic amps, in this instance 8 of them which include: Jazz Chorus, British (Vox AC30), Classic Stack (Marshall), an Acoustic amplifier and Rectified (Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier). It also has a variety of onboard effects which are selected and manipulated using 2 dials – one for flange, phase, chorus and tremolo and another for delay and reverb. The implementation of the effects means that you cannot use more than one effect from a dial... now you might not want to use a flanger and a phaser together, but if you did, you can't. The effects may be limited, but the overall package still works very very well.

Also included in the package are a three-band EQ, built in tuner and a separate mic/line in channel for singing along or connecting an mp3 player. If you're that way inclined, the Cube Street is also available in a red finish rather than black. I've been using a micro cube for students for a few years now, and for the price cannot fault the technology. Sure, it doesn't measure up to the amps it emulates, but for a fraction of the cost you get a passable fax simile, and in this form factor buskers and coffee shop giggers have probably found the perfect partner for their guitars.

Highly recommended – if you're in the market for a small amp, go road test a Cube Street!
