Help with Scales

I just got back into playing after approx. 15 years of silence. back then I just would learn some intro's and easy songs and called myself a guitar player. I can play a lot of leads and different songs now but I want to learn the how's and why's. I play Metallica, Great White, ZZ top and Im starting to get into Pink Floyd. I guess my question is what are the best scales i should be learing to "learn" how to put it all together and why???
