Hey guys, I just joined GT and gained access to all your tutorials. Dam theres a lot :p

Anyway, i've learned the basics of guitar but not so much on theory. I can read tab and if i try and try...i'll learn a song and can play it. However, i play it much slower then what i need to for it to sound like the actual song.

I decided i'm to the point where I need actual lessons. So I was hoping for a little direction.

I'm assume my first priority is to learn my scales. However, does anyone have any exercises you think would help me out with speed and dexterity. Maybe a few daily exercises that will build up my technique? Keep in mind i'm still on a basic level and screw up most stuff that goes beyond the 5th fret.

The latest song i've tried to learn is the one that brought me here because I just plain can not play it. Its called "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum and I can't tell if the lead is doing finger picking or just playing fast but it's beyond my ability and i'd like to be able to play songs like that.

Anyway, nice to be here. If you have any thoughts on where I should go from here then I would greatly appreciate it. I'd like to spend an hour or two a daily working on something, just looking for that direction on what to do with that time :)

Start here for review, for anything you may have missed or for info and skills that you do not yet know:
http://www.guitartricks.com/course.php?input=1
http://www.guitartricks.com/course.php?input=2

For example in those courses you will find beginner exercises on scales:

http://www.guitartricks.com/tutorial.php?input=474
http://www.guitartricks.com/tutorial.php?input=451

After that you can try to get a more specific idea of what you want to accomplish that you can't yet. :)

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.
