What to do with all the info?!

I just signed up today and i've been searching through the site for hours since i first logged in. There are so many lessons that i don't know where i should begin. I was just wondering if anybody could make a suggestion on where to start or how to go about using all of the information on the site to focus on what i want to learn.

I had a teacher for a year and i've played off 'n on for about 3 years after that. I would say my overall skill is intermediate but i'm not entirely sure how to really measure that. My goal in playing guitar is to learn all about Metal (or parts of other genres that could help in that one) and be able to create my own music in a band. I have very little experience when it comes to gear or recording but i would love to learn what is the best for me.

First of all, welcome to GuitarTricks. I can see that you are still not a Full Access subscriber so to access all of the available lessons you will need to become a Full Access subscriber of course.

Even though you said you think you are intermediate, I would definitely be starting off with the Beginner sections of the site. There may be a lot or a little of information that you just weren't taught by your teacher and things that were taught that you have forgotten or that you didn't use that much during your first couple of years, which may have much more significance now that you want to start writing your own stuff.

I played for 16+ years and some of the Beginner stuff was extremely helpful in advancing myself. I would consider my own skills to be about intermediate/medium level now.. and that, as I said, is after 16 years of playing. Of course a scale of Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced is a very rough and broad scale. Music and guitar is such a large and varied topic and you will probably find that even though you are proficient enough to play a majority of chords and scales, that you are still a beginner.. but not a newbie.

If you glance over the fundamentals and "beginner" stuff you may find that the more advanced topics are too hard to understand because you don't have a firm grasp of the foundation topics. Make sure you have a firm understanding of scales, intervals, chord construction, chord leading and so on., as without these basics you may encounter problems later on.

as another point to what light was saying, once you get your self set up and doing the beginner stuff and want to start learning and advancing your 'style' you might want to start learning about the blues, jazz, funk, and even classical styles. those styles will help when you start writing your own stuff by helpping you escape the 'box' of metal.
