Nah - Satriani beats Gilbert any day, cos his tunes actually have melody. Gilbert's pieces are too fast, and de-chromatised, so in effect, fine - he's ****ing quick, but he's not god the skill depart like Joey!

Satriani is a ****ing legend. Ever heard his live version of "Summer Song," in the G3 album? Check out the solo on that, and tell me that Gilberts as good!

LOL LOOK AT MY USER NAME!!!!! SATRIANI IS GREAT, OF COURSE BUT HIS MELODIES CAN'T COMPARE TO THE MIND BLOWING SKILL OF GILBERT'S ALTERNATE PICKING AND SWEEP ARPEGGIOS. GILBERT'S GOT HIM WITH SPEED, SATCH HAS MORE STYLE I GUESS...

I went to the Satriani tour this last summer. His solos were mind blowing. Petrucci is one of my favorites as well because of his metal riffs.

Eh?... Right, I've been listening to more and more Satch, Yingwie Maljhfkdjfhmsteen... and i just dont get the fuss... yes they can play fast, but it just doesn't do anything emotionally... It's very cheesy, It's the kinda music that's on those trashey programs on drag racers or motocross or datona...
I mean there's alot more to music than arpegeating... I mean take vai's "for the love of god",or "flamenco diablo" by Malmsteen, right... That simply doesn't compare to somthing like "hope" by REM, or "bruning of the midnight lamp" by hendrix...
What I'm saying is technical abillity is not substite for sheer SONG writing talent....
I still think "surfing with the alien" is by far the worst album I've heard... I've been recomemended "the extremist", but I'm still chasing it up...
As for Gilbert... I've not really heard anything by him to be able to comment...
I know they're great guitarists, but unfourtunatly as for the actaul SONG, I've yet to hear anything to change my mind...
Feel free to recomomend me some stuff, cos I honestly feel I'm missing out....

I agree that a lot of shred stuff is pretty musically-lacking, but there's a lot of emotion in some of this modern instrumental stuff. Take Steve Vai for example, now he can put emotion in his guitar, it isn't just wanking. Have you ever heard Tender Surrender or better yet seen the video? Get it off Morpheus or Kazaa, you'll be in for a real treat. I'm not that familiar with Malmsteen but from what I hear all he does is the same harmonic minor wanking on every song.

If you don't like Satch for his music-making ability, I doubt you'll like Gilbert. He's sort of a faster, less expressive version of Satch.

Paul Gilbert is one fourth responsible for the band Mr. Big. I believe that disqualifies him from consideration as an inspiration. (Sorry in advance to all of you Mr. Big fans out there)
