I'm a newbie. I'm not ready to register for this site yet (just bought a guitar, a book, and Jamorama). i coudld't afford a teacher just yet (got to wait for a raise and some side work first). Besides, I'm saving for the electric :-)

Anyway, still learning basic major chord and strengthtening my finger, while building calussus.

I have a question though - which is is the best way to learn guitar:

a) learn through the tutorial (book / cd)
b) learn by playing song through guitar tab (text, guitar pro, power tab).

I know, some of you might say - why don't use both? Just asking, how do people memorize songs (or tabs - for that matter) does it through memorization? I wasn't good with memorization (got a problem with my brain structure). I learn guitar because it uses motor (muscle) memory instead of brain.

If the pages of chords didn't overwhelmed my brain enough, then the tabs will :-)

Does tabs refer to one of the chords - or tabs mean new fingering? For example there might be tabs that doesn't refer to any of the chords.

Thanks.

Honestly, when I started out, I used both.I would start off for the first month with just the book so you learn basic chords and all that good stuff. Then, once you get comfortbale with it, go on to tabs. If you hear a song that you want to learn, go ahead a learn it (You can go to Ultimate-guitar.com for tabs). Even if the song is too hard for you, at least you try and when you get better, then go back to the song.

Now when it comes to memorizing...I never really had a problem with it. When you learn a song, just practice it everyday until you have it down perfect. If you start forgetting, then just go back to the tabs for a review. I don't think you'll have a problem with it as long as you get the tab down perfect.

But yeah, when you do get the money, I would look into lessons. It's always good to have someone there to help you out and guide you through. Good luck with everything, and most important...Just have fun and enjoy!
