I've been using Gibson's fretboard conditionner products for a long time and they do a great job

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Luthiers-Choice-3Pack-Cleaner?sku=420163

When using these kind of products you really have to make sure you don't put too much. Makes sure you wipe out all excess conditionner before putting on your strings.

Wood doesn't react well with being wet. Just think of a water damaged house. Water warps wood, and you don't want to oversaturate your fretboard with anything.

Don't use furniture polish on a guitar! These products contain silicone, which will then get transfered to the case, and anything else that it touches. If you take a silicone-tainted guitar to a luthier, you could contaminate their shop, ruining any paint or finishing work they do. That stuff is almost impossible to get rid of, and it stays around for a long, long, time.

Use guitar polish on the body, the back of the neck, and maple fretboards. Lemon oil works well on rosewood fret boards.

Yeah, but that's generally for the finished wood. Rosewood fingerboards are not. And like I said, you'll certainly find differing opinions.
