i have only heard the title track from st. anger i didnt like it too much but thats my taste. during the black album james blew out his voice so they way he sang changed. musically speaking after the black album metallica was no longer a metal band they became a pop(ular) band. this is where the music changed the most because they geared more for a causal fans base then hardcore metal heads. the video for the unforgiven 2 (reload) is a good example of trying to appeal to the younger crowd that was into soundgarden stp korn tool and rage against the machine.

but thats my two cents
They say the END is near, but I'm Tired of waiting.

As far as I can see when Metallica dumbed down musically everyone else did too... something happened between AJFA and just after the Black album that saw a shift away from virtuosity and musical structure toward very basic drop tuned groove riffs and big budget production. Pantera were one of the frist to exploit the groove riff - but in a good way with great lead passages and complex riffs thrown in for good measure. A lot of young players now are going for the cookie cutter approach to songwriting - get a guitar, learn how to play a power chord and all you need is a budget and a skilled engineer to prduce most of what's poular today. The really big production has killed the vibe too - the only BIG production metal album that sounds brilliant to my ear is the Black album - really amazing sound throughout. But I still prefer the aggression of the AJFA and the quirky sound of MOP.
I'm hoping they make big changes for the new album, hopfully the new bass player will inject some new energy and much needed inspiration. Also glad to see the back of Bob Rock - he had his run, hopefully Rick Rubin will get them back on track again. My wish list would be less 'melodic' singing from James and more aggression, more solos and complex instrumental breaks, more technical riffs, more speed etc.... basically they need to re-define the genre like they did with every album up to and including the Black album.

Well after the Black Album is when they took their long break isn't it? Then they came back with load 5 years later. When they were on their "break", they all experienced different things, so I think that when they got together to make load, there was a lot of different ideas trying to be thrown together.

Bob Rock is leaving?

THANK GOD!!!!

A lot of people out there blame Metallica for going soft, but I doubt they realize how much influence a person like Bob Rock has with their position. It's their job to push the envelope, and force the band to try/do things they normally wouldn't think of. Ever since day 1 with 'Bob', it's been a whole other band.

Granted, I do like some of the stuff they made with Bob, except for that last CD... what was it again? Saint Anger?

I listened to it ONE time and I'm STILL pissed about losing my $15. Not one single good song.... all suck-ass garbage.

Lets all pray that they start moving in a forward direction again....
