Right, metal does not have to be perfect, but in order to make good metal, you do need a good knowledge of music theory. Simply stringing together a bunch of notes that sound cool together (which is what I feel a lot of new bands do) isn't enough. If they don't fully understand the music that has inspired them, they cannot produce music that will inspire other musicians.
