Here's a Quote from Frank G. on Sweep picking.1987
Many Players use some sweep picking licks without realizing
how far the approach can be taken.
The most common pickstyle method uses strict alternate,
strokes (down up, down up,ect.
however ,some players opt for a less articulated effect,
where a picked note is followed by hammer-ons and,
/or pull-offs.In sweep picking, the same pick stroke is
used to play from two to six notes-hence the term;
sweep,Depending on the phrase, some alternate picking,
is employed.
The economy of sweep picking enables you to play a lot
of notes with minimal movement of the picking hand.
Making it easer to play at high velocities.
When you have 3 notes per string in a tab there ia a,
tendency to give it a triplet feel, so be sure,
and pratice in groups of two or four notes per beat.
(eighths and sixteenths respectively). At first only,
pratice ascending .When your comfortable with ascending,
work on descending many players find ascending sweeps,
much more natural fealing.
1.Keep the notes as separate as possible--almost staccato
(short) at first especially when crossing strings.
Newcomers to sweep picking tend to run the notes,
togather.
2.Watch your right hand and make sure that you are useing
a single movement when crossing strings, not two separate
successive strokes.
3.Alwasy practice with a metronome or a drum machine,
making sure that the notes are clean and even.
Be critical and honest when evaluating your self.
4.its harder to sweep at slower tempos.
