Greetings,

A friend was over the other day, and kinda freaked out when I started to plug in a guitar into an amp that was turned on. He said I could blow something.

I know it makes a pretty nasty pop, but I haven't busted anything yet. Is this really something to worry about? If so, how about if I'm plugging in to my computer recording system - something to watch out for?

Thanks,
Mike

Always plug up BEFORE you turn your gear on. Only IF you absolutely have to (becuase someone is pointing a gun at you or something like that) make sure the volume is all the way down on both your guitar and the amp itself. I blew up a 50 wat Peavey twice doing this and I also fried the soundcard on my pc... better to be safe than sorry - plug up before you switch on.

I plugged into my 100w Laney while it was on..... and nearly needed a change of trousers....

The volume was up at about 9.8 and I was right in front of the speaker. Not critical for the kit though. I've never blown an amp, but I have zapped a PC soundcard...
