Yes, it is possible to use any effects pedal with pretty much any amp (don't know the rules on tube driven pedals.) The point of using an Overdrive or Distortion pedal can be for a boost for solos, or just coloring of either channel. Built in effects are nice, but pedals usually sound a lot better.
