Dbx compressor

Iam looking to update my rig a little more, Ive been shopping around for little things to make my rig sound better,get bettter tones and sounds..stuff like that
i was looking at a DBX 266xl compressor. Iam just trying to find out what good it will do me, and how exactly it works.
