I need some advice on good a sweep tone.....

I need to find out how to get that smooth, sustained & overdriven effect like in the Jason Becker song "End of the Beginning", as opposed to what I have been getting which is bluesy raunch from crappy overdrive pedals with none of the consistent follow through and warmth that I so long for.....
