The only thing it helps with it is very basic left and right hand coordination, and timing... but having said that, the left and right hand coordination does not translate well over to a real guitar as there are no frets (left hand) and no strings (right hand) on the Guitar Hero controller.. so what little you do get from this "game" is not really all that usable. The timing is about all you really get from it..
All in all, Guitar Hero does NOT make you a better player. The only thing that will make you a better player is practising on a real guitar.

My honest opinion:
Its always good to try and find new ways to make guitar learning more fun, but GH isn't one of them. Its a waste of time for guitarists and draws kids away from their real guitar.

Nah dude, my entire guitar skill is based off guitar hero. When you hear me play some weird avant garde stuff on the real guitar, that's actually me trying to play iron maiden, or queens of the stone age.

Yep - it won't make you a better guitar player, but I bet it's turned people on to music they didn't know existed. How many kids do you suppose had heard of BucketHead before the game?....
...and how many know him now?
There's nothing wrong with having fun, but it has nothing in common with actual guitar playing...

I've always thought if your gonna spend so much time learning how to play something "fake" like guitar hero for several hours, why not just spend that time getting better at real guitar?

Exactly. My friends always ask my why I don't play guitar hero. They say something like, "You can play the guitar part for all the songs you like". My response to them (after trying to explain that you are not even playing anything close to the guitar part) is, "why do that, when I can learn the songs on a REAL guitar?".

I'd love to carry a guitar with me at all times, so when someone says they can play guitar because of GH, I can be like, "well it just so happens that I have a guitar here with me..."
