Picking Angle and Holding Problems

Hi guys,

I have been playing about 6 years (embarassingly enough lol) and I have recently learned my picking is inadequate for me over triplets above around 75 bmp. Anyways, below is a link to me playing a little riff, any suggestions on pick angle or holding would be great, or even better clear pics or vids. I've heard some pick at a 90 degree angle, would this be not tilting the pick at all? Because I tilt the pick greatly while playing. I'm not warmped up or anything in the video, but it shows from an overhead view my picking style. I really want to improve my picking technique so I can shred.

I current use a three finger grip is what might be causing the problem, as my angle seems to mess up the timing.

Your picking more with your thumb and finger than you are with your wrists. That can be holding you back. At slow speeds, its not biggie, I do that for better accuracy and combined with your wrist, can sound powerful, but for fast picking, you need to keep them still (without making them tense) and use your wrist to pick while you change strings with your forarm/elbow.

Nightlifter: IF your using your thumb and three fingers to grib the pick, it seems like that would put the pick at an awkward angle and make your wrist compensate for it, making it harder to pick fast and effeintly. Try only using your thumb and index. If your having trouble with the pick slipping away, its normal and you'll work through it. I know I resituate my pick while playing, but you never notice since it comes natural, like breathing, you just do it.

i once found these crazy 2.5 mm dunlop picks, it was waaay easy to pick with them because it was so thick it had to be slanted. i dont know if they still make them anymore.

They do, I use the 3mm ones. I used to use Jazz III''s, but I find these better - they also helped me stop gripping the thing so tight. Picks are worth experimenting with IMO. They make metal ones, and I saw some weird wooden ones in an advert a few days back... personal preference, but less flex = more speed (or easier acheivement of it at least).
