yea this is a brutal question. total apples and oranges. cant beat the 70s... best musicians like the zeppelins so forth and so on, and then there was the 90s... a whole other story... and then some of the bands coming around now, starting their own era of music...

Well given my age, I am going with 'old' bands. Not a real surprise since I grew up with the old bands. Hmm. Does that make me a piece of living history? That's better saying 'I'm old'. hee hee

My favorite guitarist is a member of an Old and New band, so this further displays how it really can't be decided.

I think music today is pure crap. It's all mainstream junk that producers make to appeal young kids and sell a billion records. The more mainstream it gets, the more people think its cool to listen to, and then more people buy it.

Oh I don't know about that. The marketplace dictates what music is mass produced. If you're willing to dig around some of the indie stuff and bands in other countries, you can find some really, really talented guitarists out there.

Plus, I think Jack White is an amazing guitarist / musician. :)

i can't stand either of those bands. i started playing guitar because of metallica, and they were my idols. I was post black album fan. but holy s***, the stuff they have released since 97 has been horse manure. don't fool yourself defending it, st anger was the worst album released ever. And don't give me "they wanted a raw sound" bulls***. I am a producer/engineer and you dont make a ****ty sounding record and call it raw, you go back to basics and your roots, that is raw.

In some cultures, "AC/DC" is a slang term for bisexuality. - wikipedia

zeppelin all the way.

I don't see why you're bashing St. Anger when he was clearly stating that old bands are better. I think "old" is a little past 97'.

As most house hold items became disposable so does popular music of today, you generally have to look beyond the charts now for decent bands.
Altho in Australia there is occasionally real talent on the charts (John Butler)

Hah Awesome list of Thrash Metal bands It should of been the big Three and they should of been Overkill, Testament and Exodus :D

Any way saying most of todays guitarist is something that really is not true. Compare modern shredder to ol' shredders its a slaughter. (Skill wise but of coarse there are exceptions)
Rusty vs Yngwie
Buckethead vs Van halen
Of old are the innovators but now we have the people who mastered what they started imho.

Plus in the metal world guitarists have never been so skilled its almost mandatory to be of a very high skill technique wise. (Besides Doom, Black and there other many sub-genres)

To Noisetherapy I believe making a s**t sounding record and calling it raw makes you black metal :p

I don't know why.. may be it's just a purely generational thing (ie. the music you grew up with type thing).. but I was born in 1976 and I prefer music from the 60's and 70's and some of the 80's stuff.. the further into the century things got the less I liked the current music.

May be it's just simply information overload.. so by the time you're 20 you just don't have enough room for the new stuff.. but I think at the ultimate level of truth, the answer would be that both old and new music are better.

Or.. may be you just simply "like" that kinda music.. and that's just the way it is.
