Hey Gang,

What is the best way to master a new move, is it best to go at it all day every day until you're there, or hit it for say an hour or half an hour at a time and then shift to something else and return a bit later? The latter seems more logical but what is the formal view please?

Also, not having learnt music theory, can anyone explain in idiot-proof terms please how we arrive at 13ths and 11ths given that there are only 8 notes in a standard scale? Thanks gang,

Keep on rockin'

Welcome John... :)

The latter of the two is better as you say. Regular smaller chunks rather than 10 hours over a weekend... you'll only hurt yourself. Having a regular routine is good, then move on as you master bits.

11th and 13th chords - anything from a 9th onwards is in the 2nd octave (play a 2 octave major scale to help this along), so a 9th is the same as a 2nd, 11th the same as a 4th, 13th the same as a 6th - just played in the second octave...

All built with triads - a full major 13th chord for instance would have the root, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, eleventh and thirteenth scale degrees, although obviously that's more notes than you have fingers, so some are dropped...

Welcome to the GT forum! :)

I have moved this thread to the Technique and Style section as a more appropriate location.

Hello,

One of our instructor made a lesson about practice regiment. It might help you build yourself an effective practice routine.

yeah don't practice too much at once or you might get tendonitis. Also if you get good at it from marathon sessions, you won't be able to do it when you've only been playing a few minutes, which doesn't do you any good.
Like riffs? Melody? Shred? Free mp3s? Acoustic guitars galore? Download tunes from my new acoustic album, classical guitar album, or hard rock albums at www.randyellefson.com
