I'd suggest an Ibanez Tube Screamer...

Or maybe something like a Digitech RP80... multi effects / much cheapness for what it is. Zoom make some cheaper multi-effects... they're not great, but if you're starting out and on a budget you want o be able to play with a rannge of sounds, not just one to switch on or off....
