Yup, I'd say start with alternate picking, then try either sweep or economy. I haven't started learning economy picking yet, but Im having a hell of a time learning sweeps. They are just ridiculously hard to learn.

Gotta learn legato to play all those cool satriani licks.
If you have access to the lessons on GT, you can access lessons in the style of each of these guitarists on the far right side
Like the others said, alternate picking and sweeps will be needed to play in the style of Yngwie.

for them definitely focus on lead. They only do so much with riffs. Work on vibrato, too.
Like riffs? Melody? Shred? Free mp3s? Acoustic guitars galore? Download tunes from my new acoustic album, classical guitar album, or hard rock albums at www.randyellefson.com

Personally I find economy picking pointless if you have an extremely proficient alternate picking technique.
Technique wise:
Alt Picking
Sweeping
Vibrato
Tapping
are the most important IMHO for "Shredding"

It isn't "pointless". Sure you could get away with not doing it if you are really good at alternate picking, but economy picking saves energy as it requires a lot less hand motion.

IMHO, someone shouldn't just start learning economy picking. It comes naturally all the time. You'll be playing a fast riff with alt. picking and you'll down pick twice or vice-versa not even knowing sometimes, it just doesn't happen often enough to be considered economy picking.
