Like the Beta vs. VHS thing. Beta was a far better method of recording, better clarity, smaller tapes for storage. But everybody went with big VHS tapes instead...

Believe it or not, a great deal of the adoption of VHS had to do with porn. The biggest porn producer at the time chose to focus on those, effectively killing the other format. And it's going on again now with Blu-ray vs HD DVD.
