I have heard that every composer only has 3 good ones and everything after is a variation...like three good albums worth....or 3 mega hits...I think Brahms said every composer has 3 good symphonies and etc. etc........

Three albums, maybe. I think you could probably reduce even the Beatles or someone equally great to three albums. Not three of their actual albums, mind you, but like 36 songs. I've noticed that many bands have a couple purely great albums and a whole crudload of mediocre albums with a couple good songs on them.

Definitely a good thought. I am I guess, a believer of three mega hits, in most instances that is. Other than the obvious beatles and zeppelin and all of those. But, I have listened to a lot of bands, where I have thought, wow, these songs are great, but they all sound quite similar after awhile. Pearl Jam comes to mind in this case. Their songs are amazing, but when I look back on it, unfortunately the guitar tones change very rarely, and the riffs are usually based on the same old stuff they always use. I am not trying to rag on them, cuz they are a favorite band of mine, or were, I just for some reason thought of them.

Can't say I agree, but then I'd have to go into detailed analysis of, I dunno, more than three of Mozart's Opera's or Symphonies. And I really don't feel like doing that.

I wholeheartedly disagree. But I'm not going to back it up, because I'm lazy and stupid.

It would seem that this is wholly objective. You would have to base the thought of only three hit albums on the commercial viability of a set of songs or albums and not the quality of the actual music. When you read interviews with musicians, most will say that they strongly believed in most every track they put down. So the 'hits' are determined by the marketplace and the marketplace is constantly shifting. Tastes change, fads come and go...etc.
In other words, it's really the quality of the music AND WHEN it hits the market.

For many artists, creativity is an ebb and flow situation.

Or not. What do I know.

Sounds like he just said that for the sake of saying something. It's a huge generalization...quite depressing really.

But, if he meant three just in the context of a small number, Ill have to agree.

yeah, my earlier response was kind of meaningless, and had no real point. I guess thats what i was looking to say instead. Its very general, as in, there are many bands/ccomposers this applies to, but a huge bundle that it does not in any way display their musical success.

It makes sense because three is the common thread in the existance of creativity.
Earth is the third Planet from the Sun, so it is #3.
All of the following derive from 3's.

Color (3 primary colors, Yellow,Red, Blue)
Light (Actinic, Calorific and Luminiforous)
Time (Year, Month, Day) (Hour, Minute, Second)
Past, Present and Future
The Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Ghost)
Music (Based on how the third interval is played).
Chords (1st-3rd-5th)
Mankind (Body, Soul and Spirit)
The Atom (Proton, Neutron, Electron)
Water (H2O)

I like your creation of three
Mozart, Bach, Mach
That's how it all starts, my friend. You're onto something there. Just Compose Three Mach pieces to perfection and you too will go down in history.
Or Create a famous Quote (stick with three's for best results)

"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" by Thomas Jefferson are the three things that express what this great Nation is about. From it we get the foundation that "USA" (there's that Three again) was built upon.

The three most important things you'll need to make a Great Movie are;
Lights, Camera, Action.

That's extremely debatable.

I guess we might as well stop discussing this now anyway...this thread only has 3 good pages' worth of posting.
