Hangar 18
So I'm not much of a Megadeath fan but lately I've been enamored by the song Hangar 18 from Rust in Peace. I'm through the first solo section (about 1:50 into it) and it is probably tougher than anything i've tried to learn in a while. Anyone else have any experience playing this song?

I know all the riffs, and I can bluff my way through Dave's solos, but I've never tried Marty's - my sweeping is too dodgy! I'd love to get around to learning the fourth one, though, the one that begins with that semi-legato Phrygian lick, it's one of his best leads ever, IMO.

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

I find that the more I listen to Megadeth, the more Metallica sucks. :D

Yea, it took me a long time to learn those solos of Hanger 18. The hardest part is getting those "Marty" licks to sound like his. Otherwise, it sounds like noise. Those bends and mutiple legato licks are pretty tough to nail, but when you get up down, it add a huge new spectrum to your playing ability.
Especially how he downpicks everything. Even those decending arpeggios.

Yea the only reason I got into this in the first place was because of Marty. Mustaine is a fairy IMO but thats for another time. ANYWAYS Marty write some freakin cool leads. Alexi from COB totally ripped of one particular lick from this song in one of his solos - cant remember which song though. I've been playing with .11's and those 1 1/2 step bends are taking their toll on my fingers. Luckily i just got some 10-52s. I've got that first solo part perfected at a little faster than 3/4 speed. Guitar Pro is sick program and it helps a lot!
Sorry that post just spanned like 5 different topics!

Yea, Tornado of Souls is also another great Marty solo. IMO, the best Deth solo of all time.

The entire Rust In Peace album never ceases to blow me away. As its been said, play that album for anyone, and they will too see why they majorly own Metallica. Metallica never got even close to RIP.
Good luck with Hangar 18. Great song, guaranteed difficult. I can play portions of the rhythm parts from Holy Wars, Tornado of Souls, Rust In Peace, and Take No Prisoners, and even they can be tricky. So I can't imagine how the leads are.

Although I started the post about a Megadeth song, I would like to take this opportunity to defend Metallica as the superior band. Marty is clearly more talented than Kirk, but Metallica wrote timeless metal songs and were way more badass than Megadeth. Kinda two different styles of metal though ya know.

If you wanna talk technical riffs and just pure and utter balls to the wall metal, Megadeth wins. Don't get me wrong, Kill Em All is one of my favorite albums, but Megadeth owns in my opinion.

Am I wrong, It always looks as if Marty does not use a pick??

Just an educated guess, but I think Marty does indeed use a pick, it's just that he covers most of it with this thumb and only shows the very tip of it to the strings. But, given his folk influences, he can probably fingerpick well too.
His soloing on Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction is indeed supernatural; but - and I know this won't be popular - I personally think his best lead work is on Youthanasia. The melodies in those leads are incredible, and he incorporates experimentalism and shred more coherently with this melodic sense. The solo from "Family Tree" is probably my favourite Megadeth solo ever, it sends shivers down my spine. But there's no doubt that his other Megadeth work is equally amazing.
As for the Megadeth-vs.-Metallica debate... meh. Different strokes for different folks. I think Megadeth's overall body of work is much more original and creative, but that there are a handful of Metallica songs which are just in a different class altogether. But I've heard a lot of people who believe vice-versa... anyway, I think we'll all agree that they're both very good bands, regardless of which is "better".
