I lost the bridge nut on my aucoustic guitar. A friend and I made one out of a stick, but that's not going to cut it for long - I can see the strings biting into the wood.

Did a quick search, but couldn't find one for purchase. If I was going to make a good one, what's the best material to use?

Thanks,
Buoy

there are several good materials you can choose from.

I recommend looking at a place calle Stewart-MacDonald. This place has everything.

Graphite is a popular choice because it greatly reduces the tension at the nut that can sometimes build up.

There is natural bone, but this can be difficult to work with.

There is plain ole' plastic, this is used alot on low end guit fiddles and I dont recommend it.

You can get them pre cut of as a blank. A blank you have to carefully cut the string slots yourself. Also you need to very carefully measure the width of the nut. These widths vary greatly and getting the wrong one is just wasted $$$.

As for adhering it to the guitar? I would ask at STEW-MAC and see what they say. Essentially follow the recommendations of the hut manufacturer.

Hope this helps. Good luck and let us know the outcome.

da_ardvark,

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. That stew-mac place seems like a great resource too.

Read an article on that site about how to replace - I don't have all those tools, but I bet I can get something that will work. I'll give it a try anyway, and bring it to a shop if need be.

Thanks,
Buoy

Very cool of you to offer.

Sorry if my terminology is wrong - I'm pretty new to the guitar. I thought it was called a "bridge nut" after looking at this picture - http://www.mangore.com/guitar_parts.jpg

So it's that piece the strings first touch after they come out of the face of the guitar. Some buddy of mine called it a saddle - I've got no idea what the real name is.

Thanks,
Buoy

Thanks for the links. I did try searching for the part, but I was searching for "bridge nut", not "saddle".
