It was over 3 years ago that I made this post. I thought I'd revive it as I recently waded through some old website backups and found the script so I've added it to my new website for all you that want it.

http://martincaine.com/music/guitar_scale_posters

Basically this script allows you to create your own customized posters to use as reference when learning scales. Personally I like to look at the pics while improvising to make sure I'm playing in key as I can look at the shapes/fingering.

I plan to make further changes to this for those that might want other paper size options and different layouts so please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Here's a few (low res) sample pics of the posters created by the script:

[original post]
I've been thinking for a while about creating some sort of posters (mainly for my brother as he does not seem to be interested at all in learning theory), but I never had time to get into it.

I have alot of theory books, and a few posters. The posters I prefer because I can relax and play while looking at them (instead of trying to find a position hunched over a book). So over the past few days I've put together a little script (I'm a web developer) to create a few posters I can print out here at work (we have inhouse Digital Printing equipment for A3). My brother now has 4 on his wall, and I'm starting to think I should upgrade this script to add as many features as I can and possibly release it on it's on website for any other aspiring guitarists who want a few reference charts.

Here's a link to the script, use the 3 part form to create a poster (A3 size @ 300DPI for the moment):

I do plan on adding alot more to it, so far I've only added the tunings and scales I use most often. Please feel free to leave feedback (or use the email link on the page) and suggestions. Or maybe you have ideas for improvements or other posters I could produce?

I look forward to reading any comments you may have. (and if there are any errors feel free to point them out and give me a slap)

Cool.... nice to see someone putting the effort in, and a pretty comprehensive resource.... nice man....

Only criticism if you can call it that is the colours for me anyway make it pretty hard to read, but that might well only be me... Nothing on the content, just the colours... :)

Bytrix,

That's really cool, thanks for sharing. Something I can use right now, so it's really appreciated.

Hi Bytrix,

Really good work ! I would like to see the fret number (maybe just the 3, 5, 7, 9, 12)

But once again, really good work !

A little update; I'm working on adding more configuration options and features so people can further customize the posters created, here's a list of recent additions:

  • Select the scales and modes to display - I've added boxes from which you can select the scales to display (the format of the posters is still limited to 6 per page but I'm working on automatic resizing if 7, or 8 scales are selected, or if less strings are displayed and there is more space).

  • Customize the colours used - I've added options for changing the colours displayed on the notes and also the background and fretboard areas. Took me a while to write the javascript colour chooser which I'm quite proud of.

  • Re-organised the page to be a little easier to use. I'm still working on more changes to make the user experience even better.

  • after creating a poster you will be given the options to customize.

Please leave feedback and comments, I'm going to be working on this more over the weekend and appreciate any feedback and suggestions.

*BUMP*

This got lost a short while after I posted the original topic and I just found it in one of my old backup files, decided to upload it to my new website for all you guitarists who might still be interested in it :D

Let me know if you have any suggestions, I'm fixing up those pointed out before but will be adding new stuff to turn this into a more useful resource

Very nice tool!!!

Noticed something though. Here were my choices

6 string
E standard tuning
Key of A
Vivid colors

I noticed on some of the scales, some of the open string notes are not always highlighted.

Thanks for the feedback. I just double checked and I'm pretty sure it's working correctly.. it should only show open-string notes if they are part of the selected scale/mode. Hence, there is no G in A Major so it's not got a ring around it.

Oh, ok I see what you're doing... You're still showing the open string letter even though it would not be a part of the scale.

This is an amazing piece of work!

As with all these things when you first go through it it's mind boggling but it's great if you focus on a particular part so as not to get overwhelmed.

TY
