I sometimes use a Rocktron Silver Dragon pedal in my setup. It's got a tube in it. It's got an overdrive-type distortion which uses only the tube...but then you can step on the high-gain channel which incorporates a solid-state circuit along with the tube for some peel-your-face-off distortion. It's a pretty effective pedal. I think I paid around $120 for it.
