I just picked the player I like the best - Paul Gilbert. Awesome work with Racer X.

You definatly left a lot of people out, and there are way too many to be able to create a poll. I don't really think theres a "best guitarist of all time." You have the virtuosos, but can't pick out the best since they all have their own style and flair of playing.

Friedman, Becker, Dime, Yngwie, Vai, EVH, Satch, James Murphy, Michael Romeo, Alex Skolnick... to mention but a few left out. I agree that Rhoads was an amazing and innovative player but there is no denying Paul Gilbert took the foundations Randy laid and rose the bar by a factor of 100. PG gets my vote from the above.

I voted for Tony - few can write riffs like those - but they're all great players (except for C.C. :p).

There's no "best"... They're all great at what they do...

Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duane Allman, Joe Bonamassa..... Those would be my picks.

Cut him some slack. He did say it was METAL guitarists. Last time I checked, neither of them played metal. I know metal can be viewed in many ways, but I think we all know what he means here. Granted he might have left out a few people, but to each his own.

But the thread IS titled "Best Guitar Player"

Either way... I don't think you can get 20+ people to agree on a list of 10 guitarists made by one single person... Music is so subjective it'll never happen.

Relax peeps, it's all fun at the end of the day! Don't get freaked out if people disagree with you or get hotheaded, that's the cool thing about music - everyone has a totally passionate viewpoint that is pretty much their own. You will never get a sample of guys to agree on who is the best guitar player or drummer -f act! :-)

Ya, thats basically what it comes down to. Me and one of my friends have somewhat similar tastes in music, but I've come to realize that some things just aren't for some people. bummer.

Geeeezz people just pick one and move on....you can only have ten choices when you make a poll.......if you can't decide, you are taking the "poll" too seriously....."oh should I choose him?? no then Tony might get mad....ummmm maybe Randy???.....no he only did 2 albums..this guy had great solo's...but this guy had better songs....uhhhh..OMG what will I do???"

No, no, no... It's fine!!!

I was just stating the obvious about how people won't eve agree on a list of TEN great metal guitarists... let alone a single one that can be named The Best... I'm interested to see the poll results either way.

ahhh...Best Guitarist polls ALWAYS ilicit some great responses! On your list I'd go for Paul Gilbert; at the moment his playing and writing are amazing, he always has fun and has no ego...perfect! But on a 'who's best scale', maybe there's some 8 year old kid in Poland who only plays in his bedroom churning out the most amazing stuff...but would that be fast? Or soulful? Or something totally new???

I find it hard to pick one out of 10. I have about 50 favourite guitarists!

I wish we could put that many for a poll! Then we wouldn't have to exclude any one!
