Normally you should hold your just enough so you don't loose it when playing. More than that will add unwanted stress on your muscles.
BUT! Having learn to play guitar with metal .. I can honestly say that I was getting a better crunchy metal sound when I added more resistance on the pick.
I will hold my pick tighter when playing "aggressive" songs and release some tension when playing in a strumming kinda rhythm.
So you have to find the middle ground where you can get a tone you like and have less tension in your hand.
You might want to let less of the pick standing out when you play. That way with less pick, you'll have less resistance from the string. That might help you having to hit the string with less force to get the same sound.

Do you do all downstrokes like Metallica does? I found by quitting using all downstrokes that helped a lot.

You can play aggressively without causing tension in your hand. Hold the pick as loosely as possible, but don't be afraid to move the muscles in your wrist forcefully.
If you are downpicking all their riffs, the fact is that you need to have a very fast and well trained wrist to keep from getting tense.

We all know it'd be impossible to play ALL downstrokes , but they do priase all-downstroke playing for the most part; apparently Master of Puppets is all downstrokes from what I've read in the past, but the fast part to One isn't.

MoP is primarily downstrokes, but there is still upstroking in it. They aren't "known" for being a band that uses downstrokes more than anyone else would. It just so happens that a lot of the things they play are slow enough to be played with downstrokes.
