What type of D chord is this:

|-7-
|-7-
|-7-
|-5-

And what type of C chord is this:

|-5-
|-5-
|-5-
|-3-

I'm doing Aerosmith's Seasons of Wither as my beginning full song, and it's surprisingly easy. I find these chords very challenging though, for I have small fingers and hands. I'm gonna work to get it though, and I would love learning the exact names of those chords.

Thanks

since you only showed four strings, it's hard to know whether they are the bottom four or the top four.

I checked out the tab and:

-----------------------------
-------7---------------------
-------7---------------------
-------7---------------------
-------5---------------------
-----------------------------

this is just a Dmajor. and:

-----------------------------
-------5---------------------
-------5---------------------
-------5---------------------
-------3---------------------
-----------------------------

this is Cmajor. nothing fancy :)

K, thanks. Sorry about not being clear enough, I wasnt paying enough attention when I was pasting. But there's a lot of different C major chords isnt there? So if they don't have a specific name how do you know which is which?

those are known as power chords- they're just the root, 5th, and another root of a chord, just an octave up. once you get those down, you can play just about any rock song of all time.

Here are 4 kinds of power chords:

|---------------------------|
|---------------------------|
|---------------------------|
|---5------5-----5------7--|
|---5------5-----3------5--|
|---3------------3------3--|

I know they have terms for these, but can't remeber them (theres also probably more forms :o .)

These can be difficult for someone who doesn't have a lot of hand strength, on some songs wheres theres a lot of standard tuning power chord changes my thumb starts aching so I bar with my pinkey instead of the ring while my thumb is over the neck ( you can also individually fret the notes, all up to you.) After you get your strength up, you shouldn't have a problem with them. These are the "easy" chords to play/switch.

Alright thanks a lot guys. A bit confused about roots and power chords, lol, but I think everyone is at my stage. I'll get the hang of it.

And thanks elk I'll definently use those. :)

The chords you've posted are as some of the others have said, just normal major barre chords. A 'Power' chord is just the root and fifth.

If the book says play C major, part of the fun is figuring out which one is easiest and ha the most pleasing sound to your ear...

With all due respect by not trying to correct this statement, it does bring up an important topic. The Power Chord is very common in rock music, which doesn't voice the 3rd from it's tonal center. So in reality, a Power Chord is neither Major or minor and is used in either key signature.
The above Chord Tabs do however depict a 3rd present, which make them a Major triad and when played will sound Major. They are both Major Chords in music Theory.

Thanks a lot, I understand it more now. I'm hopefully gonna get some one on one lessons soon, and I'll let my teacher know about this site. It's very helpful. :)
