Just working through the Abs Beginner lessons... For the "F" chord - What does the "(1)" on the 6th string mean?

Thanks!

It means you need to play the note at the first fret of the 6th string - which is an 'F'...

Thanks so much for the reply.

Here's a link to the page that I'm talking about. Is the answer still play the 1st fret of the 6th string? I haven't seen it notated this way - in parantheses...

Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Jessica

In this case, I just think it means it's optional.
You can either fret just the first and second strings with the first finger, or optionally fret across all six strings and do a barre chord.

That's interesting. The F chord that I learned doesn't involve the low E and A strings, only the four highest. Is this correct or just another variation?

Just a variation - that's the 'open' F. The E & A strings are barred at the first fret for the F barre chord....

You will eventually find there are even more variations. Here are a few:

You may find theory about triads (3 note chords) pretty interesting and it will make more sense as to where these chords come from. Just google for "Triad Chord Theory Guitar" for starters. If you understand the theory you can build the shapes yourself.

Go easy though. If you are just beginning (as you mentioned) don't let the stuff fry your brain. :)
