I was walking the dog in the woods last night and I hit a patch of mud, my feet went out from under me and down I went. For whatever reason, I put my left hand out to break my fall and I think I sprained it rather nicely. My wrist is swollen and even my fingers don't want to move very well. (Even typing this hurts!).

Tried to pick around on the guitar this morning and it's not going well. ARRGGGGHH!

That sucks... sprains can be worse than if you broke it. Hopefully that isn't the case for you... and don't be afraid to take a few days off from the guitar.. you won't lose anything - it will come back to you rather quickly when you pick it up again.

You wouldn't want to prolong your healing time by forcing yourself to keep playing. I know its easier said than done... but it does help. :o
Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance.

I've been fortunate enough to have healthy hands since I've picked up the guitar. Its funny, because back in high school a buddy of mine in my gym class who plays guitar (who I now jam wit) broke his finger while playing football. I couldn't understand why he was so upset, not about the pain, just about the fact that it happened. Now I know, and I'd probably do the same if I broke a finger.

And while I'm telling stories, another friend of mine who played some nasty metal was working at some mill. One thing leads to another he loses his finger and part of another one on his fretting hand. He actually got better after he hacked his fingers off.

So Hunter, I also wish you a speedy and full recovery. But at least you didn't break anything or hack anything off.
Let your soul shine. Its better than sunshine. Its better than moonshine. Damn sure better than rain.

That sucks bud! If it hurts... don't do it... might make things worse. I can definitely sympathize with you. I had to lay off for a few months after breaking my picking hand... twice :o. As Tonja said, you won't loose anything by taking a few days off. Taking a break actually sometimes helps out.

Sorry to hear that mate... I've been pretty lucky - never done anything serious to my hands that's disrupted playing...

You should try to land head or ass first next time dude... :D

Sorry to hear that, man. But sometimes these things can turn out to be blessings in disguise.

For example, a couple years ago I sprained the ring finger on my left hand twice in the same week playing basketball. Now it's bent all funny, which actually helps me play A-type bar chords.

Just to help you visualize, here's the ring finger of my right hand, with as much pressure on it as my thumb can dish out:

That sucks, mate... but to keep yourself musically active until your hand recuperates, you can still sing!

Bodies allways heal, unless they're dead and you seem very much alive so I guess YOUR GUITAR-PLAYING-ABILITY WILL BE FINE =D

How about tuning your guitar to your favorite chord and practise some - righthand - fingerpicking for a week or two ;P If it gets boring, try to play melodies with the tuners ? :D hehe. Never mind.

One word... DUDE!!! Try not to bend your finger backwards like that while playing guitar. Your joints will be mad at you much sooner than later. I dont promise but im fairly sure.

Now is a good time to focus on solid Alt. picking, muted sweeps, etc..........
Hope you heal quickly.
P.S. Use a Capo and move it around so the sound isn't so boring from just playing open strings.

Ya'll are overlooking that he's such a blues fan. So now's a perty good time for slide. And if it still hurts to grasp the neck, you might even play around with it laying on your lap.

Thassa fact, Jack! :D

Now is when some high-action clunker guitar that you never had time for before can become your best friend. Jump on into some open-tuning stuff, and don't look back! I'm thinkin' Johnny Winter's version of Highway 61 Revisited...

Oh man, hope you feel better soon. At least you didn't break it like I did. And at least you could go to the hospital if you want, like I did not.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.
