I take time off from certain aspects, but not usually from guitar as a whole. At the moment I've gotten a bit bored with the way I usually play, so I'm working on tapping with all 8 fingers... I can't really take a week off though, as I perform more or less every week at least once.

After I took my exams I had a couple of months where I probably played for 2 hours total, but other that that I play every day. For me it's not a matter of comfort - I have a guitar with me all the time and usually the desire to play it prevails... After all this time it would feel like something was missing if I forced myself to have time off...

Thanks for the advice about the finger rolling, ren. I really didn't like the finger rolling idea earlier, so it didn't come to my mind now. I guess I have no other choice, it just won't work the way I want to. I'm wondering how you guys are playing the Min Arp starting from the 6th string.

OK, an A minor arpeggio from the 6th string with finger numbers in brackets:

e---------------------------------5(1)--
b----------------------------5(1)-------
g-----------------------5(1)------------
d------------------7(3)-----------------
a-------------7(3)----------------------
e--5(1)-h8(4)---------------------------

You have to roll your fretting hand fingers across the strings - or at least I couldn't move my other fingers fast enough to do it any other way.

I take a lot of time off sometimes mate.

sometimes a week or 2 weeks. I know cos my strings get all rusty after I havent played for a while. :p

I guess during the time I dont play is cos I have something else to do like mixing my music or wateva. Sometimes I just dont feel like playing. If im not in the mood I wont play. Some days I pick up the guitar for like maybe 5 mins and thats it.

I've been laid back this week. I think I've only played a total of 2 hours this whole week. I'm probably gonna let er rip tonight though. :)

I dont know why, but I could play better than ever. All the techniques I've ever practised was just the same with not much difficulty.

When I say stop for a few days or a week, I mean to rest your brain. It's amazing how the brain works.

Trust me

Exact same thing happened to me, I went to Japan for 5 years when i was 21 and didn't play at all during that time. Before I went I was pretty fast but a poor player in my opinion, some good ideas but too little focus on melody and getting techniques right. Anyway, I came home and after a year or so bought a guitar - after about 2 or 3 months I was 100% better than I was 5 years previously. I believe that I improved simply by listening to the masters - Vai, Satch, Yngwie, Vinnie Moore etc. Actually thinking about how a song flows and visualising how a guitarist plays certain techniques worked for me. When I write lead now, I imagine it first, play it, then spend a few dsays listening to it in my car during work. I can then hear how it should go and imagine playing it, when I sit down out it pops directly onto the fretboard. Everyone has a different approach - whatever works best for you is the way to go.

Unless I am actually writing a track I don't practice at all, I didn't play for 6 weeks recently then sat down and came up with my latest and greatest. If I play too much I end up in a rut playing runs and exercises over and over - time off breeds creativity. Playing guitar is like riding a bike, once you can do a technique you won't forget it, playing it over and over just to get faster does my head in. Yay for time off!

Dude, I couldnt agree more. You hit the nail right on the head. People just think playing for 8 hours a day everyday will make you a better guitarist. Thats not true. Most of the time, after a vacation when i pickup a guitar after a month or so, its the best playing iv heard. It just is, and im trying to make other people find that out aswell.

And guitar should never consume your life...

If you're into 8 finger tapping, you'll dig on this video. It's INSANE!!!!!!
The guy plays a Custom 10 string he made and has these little single capo's mounted in places. I especially like the part when he adds a C-Clamp and uses it for a capo to certain strings. Very creative to say the least.

That's hilarious! Hmmm. I guess it's better to play a little slower, eh? :)
