Ok .... all i have is an electric guitar and a small practice amp. I am getting better but found no mater how I set my gear (gain, volume, or pick ups) some songs sound nothing at all like they are suposed to sound. For instance. ... sweet child o mine by GnR. I know the notes and hit them... but my god its no way near close to the song. I know im needing more gear. I was wondering If a person who is on a budget and has to buy things one at a time and save for them. What would be my next purchase? Im thinking a better amp that has tone, gain, and all that other stuff I have no idea what they do .....lol. Thanks.

well you need a guitar made of mahogany..use the neck pickup...if you have that get a decent amp...with tubes

you could get a better amp which would improve ur tone, but in my opinion a better and probably cheaper option would be to get something like a digitech rp50 or rp80, it basically gives you lots of effects that are pretty good for quite cheap such as different distortions and reverbs
it wont sound exactly like slash's tone but it should be closer than you are at the moment.

Your fingers and playing style have the most to do with your tone... You can own as much expensive gear as you want... but if you can't play the notes the way they should be played it won't matter... Practice, practice, practice...

I play with way too many guys that have a ton of expensive gear but htey can't play more than 15 seconds of any song... It's pretty ridiculous... Learn to play the instrument before moving onto any expensive gear...

A DigiTech RP-80 would be a good investment to start out with so you can mess around while you improve your skills...

Another thing that a lot of guitarists do when they're learning is hide behind distortion... Play everything as clean as you can an practice on accuracy... then add the distortion later once you've learned the notes...

Yea I have noticed the hiding behind distortion thing. I just know im hitting the notes on certon songs and it dosent sound like it at all. The timing is right just not sounding right. Ohhh well I'll look into the DigiTech first before I break down and purchase a better amp. What exactly is the digitech called?....I know that DigiTech is some sort of name brand. Just wonderd what the componet is called.

Yeah, I can recommend those RP series units. For the money, they do a lot. Sure they aren't exceptional at any one thing, but they sound pretty good and are versatile. And relatively cheap too. Oh and they now come with artist presets emulating some famous players. If Slash isn't a default one already, they also have a website to share patches aimed at specific artists/songs.
