Learn one of the parts backwards, either be able to play the guitar part in your sleep or recite the lyrics while your writing and English essay..(for example)
If you're not having to concentrate on one of the parts, it's a lot easier...
Also, start learning SLOWLY...make sure everything is in place, then bring it up to speed...
Can't really say much more since I don't sing, hehe, but there's some thoughts
Don't worry too much about me, ignore me long enough and I'll go away.

It is very difficult. I can barely get by strumming a few simple chords while singing. All I know is that it takes hours and hours of practice. You do have to have the parts down cold so that you're not really thinking about what you're playing or singing, just that the parts are in sync. I still have no idea how Mr. Hetfield plays those complicated riffs and sings.

Awesome!! Something i can help out with. Well, do you know how to dance? Because to me playing rhythm while singing is the same as dancing while singing, you line up your chords with the vocals just like you would dance steps.
Ok, thats a cheesy analogy. But, try singing along to a song you know how to play and play air guitar while you do it, or just play real guitar and focus on the vocals. Once you learn how to sing and play, even complex things get easy. Think of your strumming as 'keeping time' just like if you tapped your foot. What type of music do you listen to? i'll recommend a song to start with if you like. After a while, even metallica riffs and dave matthews stuff is just like walkin and chewin gum.

I play much different music.. from heavy
heavy heavy death black metal to blues
and country

the story:
I (and my band)signed up on our schools
annual"show" were everybody does something
like acting,stand up comedy,singing,playing
and so on......

unfortunately our vocal caught a cold
and was unable to sing so i had to do
the singing part while playing the rythm
guitar...

It went straight to hell.. altough i
practiced almost 24/7 the days before
I even stopped singing or playing
sometimes because i just couldn't
handle it. Its not my voice, many says I've
got a very good clean singing voice, but
I just couldn't manage to sing and play..

I probably saved myself doing an impressive
solo, letting everybody know that i was
ment to play guitar not singing...

Now,our vocal singer has moved to another
city, and vocals is once again handled to
me. and since this site has helped me a lot
i wondered if anyone could help
me out....

thanks for listening...
