Reaper is the next big thing, created by the guy who did Winamp. The creators have a really good marketing policy which offers the software at only $30 (as a donation) - incredible value considering it has the best of Cubase and Protools mixed together in one very easy to use platform. The plan is for them to get a massive user base then start charging for upgrades, at that stage they hope to outdo Cubase and Protools for market penetration - at $30 Reaper is considerably better value than $700 for Cubase SX3. Judging by the current level of uptake and the rave reviews Reaper will certainly be a majr player witin the next 2 years if not sooner. Unlike Protools, Reaper is VST friendly and is also very powerful when it comes to FX plugs - some really great free ones bundled. My advice, this should be your first prort of call, you simply won;t find anything anywhere within $500 of this program with even half of the features.
