I'm a little late here but...I don't have much experience with them, but IMO, they are only overrated as soon as you are buying one only for the name.

As far as amps go, I've never been able to afford the high dollar ones, but Peavey has always ended up being my brand of choice. But next I'm going the power amp/cab route, as I also am looking for just amping modeled tones from my Podxt. You might also consider a powered mixer.
I've had this Yamaha mixer on my wishlist for awhile. I'll pair that with a pair of 10" monitors. And later if I want/need to go bigger, I can add bigger cabs. That's just the one I want, but you can surely find cheaper ones if you don't need all those features.
As I don't currently have a mixer either, it will serve that purpose too. That way I can have the extra inputs for a cd player, other guitars/basses, or whatever audio signal (drum machine, mics, etc) and be able to...well...mix it all.

Does anyone know any amps that sound like a Marshall at low volumes and under 1000-ish. Heads, I mean.
PRS playa, how does the valveking compare to a Marshall. I know its probably a silly question cause Marshalls are a world differnt, but does it give that really heavy creamy buzz like a Marshall.

Nothings going to sound like a Marshall but a Marshall. haha. You could look at getting a used JCM head off Ebay or something and getting an attentuator so you can saturate the tubes and still control the volume. That'd be your best bet.

Are you talking about a vintage Brit tone or an overdriven Brit tone? Because there's a difference between the Marshall amps of the 70's and the Marshall amps of the 80's- present.

The Valveking isn't going to get you close enough to a Marshall (it uses 6L6 power tubes, and Marshall's use EL34 power tubes). The Valveking is more like a little brother to a 5150. Great tones for the price, but it's no Marshall clone by any stretch of the imagination.
It's not a head, but I just picked up a Traynor YCV50 Blue 1x12 combo that puts out some real nice Marshall type tones. Here's the link to my review of it, which has a long sound clip I did of it. >LINK<

About 5 years ago I was lucky enough to get a 50W JCM800 prototype for a great price from a friend's dad who was getting rid of all of his gear. I have never gotten over the sound of it either. It has such a HUGE tone

With all of the options available nowadays to modify and fine tune Marshall's leading edge in technology, how can the Beast be overrated? Nothing on this planet comes close.

I'll keep with my Rivera, thanks. ;)
I agree with ya, i'll stick with my Vox amps, if they're good enough for 3 of the biggest bands that have ever been (Beatles, Queen, U2) they're good enough for me!

I found that 'The Marshall Sound' tended to reduce the contribution of the guitar, much the same way that active EMG pickups do. Not my cuppa, thank you very much.

I don't think they are overrated but they have been putting out lower quality amps for a while, as well as higher end ones. I know 2 people who recently bought "Marshall" 1/2 stacks that were made in Viet Nam (I'm not making this up), solid state with built in multi-effects junk but these guys thought they had the real deal because it said Marshall on the front. I'm not slagging Marshall for making lower end products for beginners; just about every gear company is now, but I can see why some people may think Marshall is overrated depending on what they play through.
I have Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Tech 21 and Epi Valve Jr amps and they all fit their purposes well.
PS the Crate Power Block/POD idea sounds like a good, inexpensive and versatile rig.
