The index finger barre method can easily be learned - practice practice etc. (i.e. press down the D G & B strings with your index finger (don't worry about the high E - just mute it) and strum the A D G & B strings. Others' advice above is wrong: the A string remains open, the D G & B strings are depressed at the 2nd fret. You should also learn SOME way of using 2 or 3 fingers to make the chord also. Learning the barre method will serve you well in the future when you begin to tacle barre chords.
