As for the music revelation, I totally dig what you're saying. What you're saying as far as the soul vs technique is why I always side on the Hendrix side of the Hendrix vs EVH debate. Whenever I hear Hendrix I close my eyes and think "damn, this dude really is passionate about his music." EVH is just as passionate I'm sure, but sounds very methodical, technical and while still amazing, just doesn't give me the emotion that I get from listening to Jimi
