Of course its not ABSOLUTELY necessary to take lessons,
especially if you dont plan to be the best there is,
and if you have a tight schedule.
I would strongly recommend a basic guitar book that will
teach you some chords, some scales and some more.
I recommend that you dont choose a REAL basic book, theyre
often a bit TOO basic, like for kids (Maybe you are a kid,
but I assume youre not).
You can make learning faster and probably funnier if you buy one of them books with a instruction video, Ive never
tried one but Ive heard theyre pretty good.

One thing you can do is:
If you want to play rock for example, buy a book with
the GUITAR basics, and then a book with the ROCK basics,
because its good to be familiar with the guitar before you
start jammin'.
