I know it sounds like a stick in the mud, but might I suggest lessons? Until you learn the notes and train your ear to them, you will not be able to put your ideas on paper. I agree, learn chords, and if you don't take lessons buy some books that will teach you theory, rythym, and all that stuff, cause although it's boring it is very important.
