The main reason that I believe the sound will eventually burn out is because of the limited boundary in tone it allows for guitar. Some bands are tuned down "as low as they can go" for conventional six string guitar design (even seven string for the most part). There's less room for creativity with limited sources in tone, so the more bands that use up what's available, eventually will have 3 out of 5 others sounding similar to them, until something changes or they create a new instrument.
