i got this thing from like a yard sale and i was thinking if i could use it on my guitar because i sanded it off and did some custom art on the alder body.

i wanted to stain it a bit(maybe) it and then put a clear polish to finish it off and this just might be it. what do you guys think?

note this is not my main guitar and its not really that expensive so i can live with it being a little f-ed up. but it would be nice if it looked great cuz i like my stuff that way.

this looks like a newer version of it.. http://www.minwax.com/products/onestep/woodsheen.cfm

You say you did some custom art. I assume this was in some type of paint. If I was you I would take a piece of scrap wood and just put some of the same paint you used for the custom art on it. Let it dry well and then test clear coats over it. You don't want to find out that the chemicals in your clear lift or smear the art work.

the paint itself was a long process.

the first layer is acrylic paint (just so i'd know how it would look)

then i put a mixture of thinned acrylic paint with a permanent glossy finish and painted that on top of the acrylic.

so the paint will not bleed or smudge at all.. its like that part's already finished. also, the painting part was during the summer so its had a long while to dry.

my problem is, i don't have those materials anymore and can't recreate it.

You still need to know if this stuff is going to trash the paint.

Try out a small area on the back, or on the bottom edge where it won't be in your face. If it works out, good. If it goes wrong, you haven't ruined the whole thing.

Good luck! :)

You don't want to cut through the clearcoat and damage the artwork underneath.

Apply several coats of the clearcoat, and then rub it down with a fine abrasive pad.
