My Windows Media Player hasn't been playing CDs for a long time. Today I got fed up and deleted it off my computer, then downloaded it again. It took me 2 1/2 hours (stupid dial-up), and when it was finished, it still didn't play CDs.

What happens is this: I put a CD in my computer, and WMP pops up (like it should). A little box opens that says "We cannot play this CD in digital mode, please press 'OK' to try it in analog mode" or something like that. So you press OK and then it says "We cannot play this CD in analog mode. Please change your settings." I've gone through the troubleshooting stuff and nothing seems to work.

Has this happened to any of you? If so, how'd you fix it?

Ok, first have you tried using a different program like iTunes ?
Can you still hear system noises (like the windows sound when the computer boots) ? This will tell you that al is well with your speakers and the sound card.
Have you tried installing a newer version of the sound card driver ?

Also have you checked the connection between the CD player and the sound card ? their is a digital cable (just a little teeny weenie one necessary for direct digital data transfer).

Hope this helps some, if we can at least rule out a few major things than perhaps we can find put 1) what the problem is and 2) a cheep way to fix it !

Creta -- It's media player 9. I never even thought to download 10.

Doc -- It's nothing wrong with the speakers, sound card, or CD drive. I can get CDs to play if I just use the generic Windows CD player thing. Even Windows Media Player works for playing songs that are already on my computer and streaming audio and whatnot. It just won't play friggin CDs.

It's probably not a huge deal, this computer is fairly old and shoddy as it is. I'd euthanize it, but then I'd lose all contact with you folks!

as a last resort you might want to check your audio and cd player drivers... maybe it could be a bug somewhere in that system.... maybe check for updated drivers.
