I've done my fair bit of lurking and now I want to soup up my awful guitar.

My current set up is:
-------------------------------------------------------------
A special eddition IBANEZ RG550 -
that closely resembles this newer model:
http://www.ibanez.co.jp/eg_page.php?REA_ID=2&PAGE_ID=358&COLOR=CL01

Its exaclty the same right down to the pickguard color except it has
*ibanez V7 and V8 pickups.
*Basswood with a rosewood neck.
*Super Wizard neck.
*One Volume control, one tone control and a
*five way selector. H/S/H, ibanez's own.
*Floyd Rose Lo Pro Edge trem ... locking nuts.

Now I'm tired with what I have and i'm looking to rehash everything. I've saved up about 2 grand - I know its horribly low -

now I'm looking to upgrade the pickups first - then buy a new pedal and then ... get me a decent amp.

My current amp is a Fender classic tube amp.
Pedals : 1 - boss metalzone
saving up for a - MXR ZW-44 Dunlop Overdrive

----------------------------------------------

What i'm looking to get -

My options for pick ups are:
1) Zakk wylde : EMG 81 and EMG 85 humbucker pick-ups
2) Slash's : Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II humbuckers, Fishman Powerbridge
3) D-Sonic and Air Norton combo. (off the petrucci forums)
4) D-Sonic with a Blaze on the neck (petrucci forums)
5) dave murray's - SEYMOUR DUNCAN HOT RAIL setup
6) Gibson toni iommi PAF sig pickups
7) morello uses an EMG 81 in the bridge and an EMG 85 in the neck position, Ibanez Edge Floyd Rose Tremolo, on one guitar ("Arm the homeless") and uses hotrails on another ("Soul power")
8) John5's hot rails
9) lol no one uses dimarzio's anymore - shame really but i'll keep it as an option

I've heard countless tales of people souping up their guitars and not getting the sound they want.

Well here i'm begging the forum 'deities' - what set up would sit well with my RG550 ? I like having a single coil so would pulling out the humbuckers and placing two EMG's down help?

Styles required:
I'm still in love with classic 80's metal but I also like alot of scandanavian death metal like children of bodom, nevermore, necrophagist etc.

yet at times i'd like to hone my hendrix skills

So what pick ups would be best suited for me?

Well, that's me done then. All but two of my guitars have dimarzios.

I'd be looking more at your amp and effects for an upgrade. I had a guitar with the V7/V8 pickups in it, and I don't remember it being that bad.

Also, bear in mine the 'wylde overdrive' pedal is noisy - or at least the one I had was....

So yeah, upgrade the pickups if you want, but I think the amp and effects will get you a bigger and better result....

Yeah with v7 and v8's its hard to get a richer squeel out of the notes. Or may be I'm no good with my squeels i dunno - so do you think the v7 and v8's should stay and i should say no to the emg?'s I'd be keeping my single coil just replacing two humbuckers with EMG zw- 81's and 85's - thats about it.

Also is the zakk wylde pedal worse or better than the current boss metal zone that I have?
