I've just returned to view this site and have told numerous students to check it out.. But why is it no longer a free site? Or at least why are there so few free lessons.. terrible.

Perhaps I can answer your question in the form of a hilarious web-comic.

Clickums.

Now replace "Shakespeare" with "GT" and disregard all the stuff about Hamlet.

These always make me laugh. It is also 'terrible' that cars, houses, food and beer all cost money.... but they still do.

Why should it be free? If it wasn't worth paying for, GT wouldn't exist in it's charged membership format... bandwidth costs money - hosting video & mp3 increases that cost.

The guys here ran it as a charity for some time, but as the amount of content increased, so did the cost - and surely it's only fair that the cost be spread across the userbase? The forum is free :D

I don't think $5 a month is unreasonable for the amount on offer. In the UK, that's the cost of a cup of coffee, or 10 cigarettes for example....

They don't tax as much for tabacco products as they do in the US?

I believe that the tax on tobacco products accounts for 80% of the overall cost in the UK. When I was in the US I think I remember buying 20 cigarettes for about $5 - and here in the UK, it would cost twice as much, hence the $5 for 10 comment....

I don't know what % of the cost in the US is tax though. From where I stand, it's just great that everything in America is half price for me!

Back to guitars - you'd pay the equivolent of $3500 or maybe more for a PRS custom if you purchased it in the UK  .... and ouch!

I'm curious, do you give your students their lessons for free?
